It can be easy to do what others want us to do for affirmation. Be yourself for genuine engagement is the lesson. Learning the difference between positive and negative personal behavior comes from knowing ourselves.
Class online, popular social media platforms, and all things internet are where we are known to act different. Ironically, quotes are easy to find online. ‘Be yourself because everyone else is taken’.
Online actions, engagement, and activities, associations, that are in our best interest are positive. Moderate unhealthy interaction. It does have entertainment value.
Be yourself meaning
Online friends are not the same as friends in real life. It is hard to judge someone from their online contacts. It is more telling to judge profiles, contacts, and engagement. More factors. Engagement is the biggest one.
A person is themselves when they act as they do around their closest relationships. Work, family, and friends are our primary contacts.
Acting different when interaction is digital is fake. Many people make trouble with inflammatory comments. Trolls. This is not being yourself because it is different from normal social standards.
A place to be yourself
Your best self in communication is the manners you have been taught. This may default to teachers, trainers, or civic organizations. The ‘Grandmother Test’ of acceptable vocabulary is a popular standard.
Reasonable actions with positive effects are good. Decisions based on our experience and education are our own.
Following standards we learned at home, school, and elsewhere encourages everyone to be on their best behavior. Being your best self is more than creating a positive online image. It is a responsibility of Digital Citizens.
The internet class
People who act differently online than they do in reality cause communication problems. At the extreme, online instigators and agitators are considered trolls. Online communication should not be taken to be completely serious.
Be yourself for all the good things it can do for us, online society. It’s good netiquette.
We are your associations. Online engagement takes more into account. Having good friends does not make up for bad online etiquette.
